Making A Splash: The Jim Dailey Indoor Pool is Back! 💦

On September 25th, Little Rock Parks & Recreation proudly celebrated the grand reopening of the Jim Dailey Fitness & Aquatic Center's indoor pool! After 18 months of renovations, we were thrilled to welcome back members, staff, and honored guests to this beloved community space.

A Long Time Coming ✨

Originally built in 1942, the indoor pool underwent significant upgrades, marking a new chapter for this historic facility. The project, funded through bond dollars approved by voters in 2022, transformed the space with new pool surfacing, upgraded lighting, wall and floor finishes, and a state-of-the-art HVAC system explicitly designed for a natatorium.

Mayor Frank Scott Jr. expressed his excitement, acknowledging the pool as a vital community resource for health, wellness, and connection. "We wanted to ensure it was done right because our residents deserve the utmost quality," the Mayor shared.

Director Leland Couch emphasized that this project was more than just a pool reopening: "This renovation is part of our commitment to creating exceptional spaces that enhance the quality of life for all Little Rock residents."

A Special Place in the Community 🌟

During the ceremony, speakers highlighted the pool's role in fostering inclusivity and health. Advisory Board Member Layne Brett fondly referred to the facility as "the people's pool," recognizing its history of welcoming individuals of all backgrounds and abilities.

The reopening also symbolizes more than infrastructure upgrades. New accessible features, such as pool lifts, ensure that individuals with limited mobility can fully enjoy the facility.

Chris East of Cromwell Architects discussed the importance of the HVAC improvements. He recalled how previous conditions made it difficult to manage moisture, saying, "There used to be a cloud of chlorine in the air." The new system enhances air quality and creates a brighter, more welcoming atmosphere.

Looking to the Future 🌊

With the pool open once again, Little Rock Parks & Recreation is eager to continue making improvements. If the proposed one-percent sales tax increase passes this November, additional upgrades—including renovated locker rooms, roof repairs, and enhancements to the outdoor pool—will further elevate the facility.

Moreover, War Memorial Park, home to the Jim Dailey Center, could be transformed into a central park for all residents to enjoy with a $14 million investment.
